With the rise of affordable solar systems, more and more UK residents are investing in renewable energy solutions. Solar PV systems are an especially cost-effective and reliable way of harnessing the power of the sun.
But you may be wondering: can I then sell any excess energy back to the national grid? The answer is yes!
What is the Feed-in Tariff?
The Feed-in Tariff (or FIT) is a Government-backed scheme that incentivises people to generate their own clean electricity and export their surplus energy to the national grid.
Under this scheme, solar PV system owners will receive regular payments from their chosen energy supplier for every kWh they export to the grid. This incentive amounts to 4-6 pence per kWh as of January 2023. You can check the most up-to-date tariff rates here: https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/master-publications-library?keyword=FIT%20tariff&sort=publication_date
How can I start selling my excess solar power back to the national grid?
If you have or are looking to install a solar PV system, you can apply for the FIT scheme with any energy supplier registered with Ofgem. The application process is usually quite straightforward and can be completed online in just a few minutes.
Once your application has been approved and your Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN) has been allocated, you should begin to see regular payments for any surplus energy you export back to the grid.
Can My Energy Solutions help me sell solar power?
We focus on helping our customers make cost savings by installing reliable and affordable solar PV systems. However, once your system has been installed and commissioned, you can start taking advantage of the generous Feed-in Tariff scheme in order to start selling your excess solar power back to the national grid.
